Dr Ruben Cloete, a lecturer at the South African National Bioinformatics Institute (SANBI), University of the Western Cape (UWC) has been awarded the prestigious Fulbright fellowship to attend the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) in August 2022 till end of December 2022. Being a young academic he has competed with several Professors for the fellowship and was awarded a 5 month research experience to establish new collaborations and networks between SANBI, UWC and computational staff (Prof Andrej Sali, Prof Brain Shoichet and Matt Jacobson) at UCSF.
His primary goal is to learn new methods in computational modelling and drug design in the laboratories of Prof Andrej Sali and Prof Brain Shoichet. These methods he will employ in existing projects such as Tuberculosis and SARS-Cov2 coronavirus drug discovery as well as modelling drug resistance mutations in the proteomes of various organisms.
